Field Trip Tips
We hope to make your class room trip to the apple orchard an
exciting, educational and organized tour. These tips will help
your tour go smoothly and allow each student to get the most
out of his/her farm experience.
- PLEASE TRY TO ARRIVE ON TIME FOR YOUR TRIP.
- If your group is
to be more than 15 minutes late please call 270-269-2242
to inform us!
- In case of inclement weather at your school, please
call the orchard to see if it is raining there.
- If it is
raining at the Orchard, we will call the school to reschedule
your tour.
- Payment is expected at the time of your visit. A good
time to make payment is when you first arrive. Receipts
will be available on the farm. Checks should be made payable
to Lovell’s Lacy Ochard. We also accept cash.
What do I need to bring?
We
will provide all needed bags for student’s apples and
pumpkins. We will also provide markers to teachers
What are you going to see?
A
working fruit orchard where apples and pumpkins grow for distribution
and sale; how the fruit is harvested, how apples are carefully
handled through grading and packing before selling, and how fruit
is stored for optimum quality.
What do you need to do before going?
You
need to begin your apple unit one week before your date and plan
to continue it at least one week after your visit. Prepare your
class and yourself for inclement weather and field conditions
(jackets and tennis shoes). Orchards are usually located on hillsides
and have cool breezes and wet morning grasses. However, afternoons
might be very warm. Don’t forget bee kits if you have students
who are allergic. We also ask teachers to bring boxes to place
children’s apple bags into. This will allow each student
to get home with their apples in good eating condition. We will
provide bags for the student’s apples and pumpkins. Another
idea that helps to keep things organized is to have students
in each class to wear color coordinated shirts or teacher name
tags so that it is easier to keep classes together and organized
.
What do you do when you arrive?
An
assigned guide will meet your bus and inform it where to park.
Then all students will be asked to get in line by class.
The Tour will include the following:
- An informational speech
about the orchard and growing process.
- Viewing of harvest.
- A chance to pick your own apples.
- Viewing and explanation
of handling, grading, packaging, and storing of apples.
- A visit to the Orchard store and discussion of market.
- The tour also includes a trip to the petting barnyard, straw
maze, a chance to play in the Kiddie Coral, and a glass
of apple cider.
- If you are doing Grand Harvest tour you will also pick a
pumpkin right out of the patch and hear an educational
story about how pumpkins grow.
- We will give the students a chance to visit the apple store
and bakery to purchase a soviener. Items range from 20
cents to $8.00.
Please Remember!
An apple Orchard is a busy place! While we have
made a commitment to teaching your students and providing
your students with a fun educational experience, the orchard
is full of equipment and workers rushing to get the crop harvested
and stored. To make your tour a success, please help your students
to experience the beauty of the orchard and to be active in the
control of your class.
THANK YOU FOR TOURING WITH US! |
